Spring Flowers by Mike Mozart

The 11 best songs for spring 2021 from Wolf Alice, Katy B, Ella Henderson and more

Or #Springhassprungish

Traditionalists would say it’s not time for Fiskal Policy’s spring playlist because it isn’t official spring yet.

I say up yours to tradition and rules. There are so many great tracks you need to know about this week so I simply cannot wait any longer!

Spring Flowers by Mike Mozart
Spring will be well and truly here when tulips are on sale in the shops (they might be already – I haven’t been to a supermarket for weeks so am not sure) (“Spring Flowers” by JeepersMedia is licensed under CC BY 2.0)

First up is the track that sums up the sense of how we have lost a year of going out, of making memories, of losing friends and making new ones. It’s Marea (We’ve Lost Dancing) by Fred again . . and The Blessed Madonna.

The spelling of tune as choon would be appropriate here

Second is another track that I first heard on Annie Mac in the week and thought was absolutely astounding.

Wolf Alice is a band I have been unknowingly aware of for quite some time – I say unknowingly because a search through WhatsApp messages suggests I saw them live at least once at Glastonbury (in 2015 or thereabouts) but have never bought any of their music.

This may change in June when, I believe, the album Last Man on Earth comes from is released. The track gives me goosebumps. It’s that good.

This gives me goosebumps

Third on my spring playlist is a remix of 2 Far Gone by Moses Boyd featuring Katy B. Yes, there’s only one Katy B and years after she promised to keep on moving with the lights on she is back on this track.

Let’s hope it is the first of many more new tunes from the South Londoner.

It’s great to have Katy B back in music land

Following a pattern of returns to music land, this lockdown has also seen the return of Ella Henderson (you’ll know her from The X Factor in the year of the London Olympics and her single Ghost).

Back in the X Factor days Ella played venues including The Lounge Bar in Chislehurst. Nowadays no bars are open in England, but hopefully one day soon if Boris Johnson is to be believed.

The video for her latest track Let’s Go Home Together with Tom Grennan has reminded me of the days when beer mats used to exist.

Beer mats and pubs are now just memories

Way back in 1998 at a very muddy Glastonbury I was blown away by Kim Gordon in Sonic Youth playing her bass with her wellington boot-clad foot.

I’m also blown away by her latest video for Hungry Baby (a track originally released in 2019).

It’s a very powerful video

And now for something completely different. I’m loving Moonwalk Slide by RV, Chip and BackRoad Gee.

Say hello to my little friend

None of the tracks on The White Stripes Greatest Hits album are new but I do really like Jack and Meg White so am taking the liberty of including Seven Nation Army here (Greatest Hits was released fairly recently so it counts as new in that way.)

Hands up if you’ve ever been to Wichita

I like nice biscuits and I really like this track, Fem Chem, by Nice Biscuit.

And – as a massive bonus – the video is weird enough to make you think you’ve chanced upon it on late night Channel 4 after waking up on the sofa in a daze.

There’s a lot going on in this video

I didn’t bake any banana bread during lockdown – don’t judge me.

But do enjoy Don’t Judge Me by FKA twigs, Headie One and Fred again . . (yep, it’s his second appearance in the playlist).

This is super good

Breaking the rules for this (mostly) new music playlist I’m including Da Funk by Daft Punk – mostly because it is great but also mostly because it’s sad they have decided to split up.

It’s sad there won’t be any more Daft Punk tracks

And also breaking the rules is my favourite Mint Royale track, featuring Lauren Laverne from Kenickie – and now 6 Music etc etc.

It’s not officially summer, it’s not even officially spring – but there can be miracles when you believe.

I miss the days when Lauren Laverne sang songs

Check out the Spotify playlist so you can play all the tunes at your coming soon spring party.

Stay safe for another week!
